Our last (but definitely not least) feature in our Women at Archiact series is our wonderful HR director, Tara! Tara oversees the organization and coordination of operations to do with all things people. She is an absolute ROCKSTAR when it comes to people management and making Archiact a fantastic place to work (our holiday office party last night was blast!).
She’s shared some awesome experiences and has some great advice for girls looking to get into the tech industry:
What project(s) are you currently working on?
I am still pretty new here, and my role isn't project specific - I contribute to people operations to all of our projects and teams.
What do you love most about working in VR?
How fast the tech is moving and ALL of the possibilities and opportunities that presents for the company and those of us who work here. There are so many really smart people here.
What three words would you use to describe a typical workday?
Inspiring. Hectic. Humourous.
What is your biggest achievement to date - professional or personal?
I was a surrogate (as in be pregnant and have a baby for someone else) - it was something I always wanted to do and I didn't think I would get to do it. I never really aspired to be a parent. The experience of pregnancy and labour and birth is what I wanted.
What is your personal mantra or motto?
No time for jerks!
Do you have any advice that you would like to share with young women aspiring to work in technology?
We face enough obstacles. Do what you need to do to not be your own obstacle.
What are some of the challenges that you have faced in this industry?
Aggressive and passive discrimination around gender, LGBTQ2/S. Being in HR and being mistaken for the complaints department or a "mother" figure in the workplace. I am no one's parent. (See the bit about being a surrogate!)
Just for fun! If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you bring with you?
Books. A friend. An exercise ball.
What is your favourite VR game?
We hope you’ve enjoyed meeting and reading about just a few of the women who work at Archiact - we wouldn’t be where we are without them. As we mentioned in our first post in the series, only 23% of workers in the gaming industry are female and only 26% of computing jobs are held by women. We are proud that at Archiact, over one third of our workforce is made up of women.
