The Oculus Connect 2 conference took place this last week in Hollywood, California and Archiact's President, Derek Chen, and Executive Producer, Eric Hine, attended. It was an exciting three days packed with excellent demos, industry-altering announcements, and fantastic VR professionals.
One of the best parts of the conference was the awesome game demos. The Archiact crew got to try out the amazing Oculus CV1 and the fantastic games that were a part of it. The crew also experienced the intense, high-detail Edge of Nowhere by Insomniac Games. Toybox was another mind blowing VR experience that will undoubtably alter future social experiences. As a part of Toybox,Eric was able to play ping-pong, tetherball, boomerangs, and could even feel a sense of connection with other players. On the last day,the team was able to experience the Matrix in slow motion when they played Bullet Train by Epic Games. In the game, the team could shoot their enemies with Oculus Touch motion controllers, slow down time to grab bullets, and pelt bullets back at the opposition. All the demos offered high quality VR and great entertainment.
The Archiact team was able to attend the keynote sessions on Day 2 at the beautiful Dolby Theatre.Oculus announced a slew of impressive plans and partnerships and included an appearance by Mark Zuckerberg, who declared VR as "the next platform". Oculus also revealed that the third generation of the GearVR would be compatible with multiple Samsung phones and would be priced at $99. To add to the enthusiasm around the new headset, Netflix announced it would be creating an app for the GearVR. All of the plans for VR hardware and content seem to indicate VR is heading closer and closer to the mainstream. The keynote can be watched on Twitch.
Alongside all of the entertaining game demos and the exciting announcements, the Archiact team met some awesome VR enthusiasts and professionals. We were excited to break bread with Ustwo Games, the makers of Monument Valley, and chat about VR.
Overall, Oculus Connect 2 was a memorable event, one that undoubtably sent waves throughout the VR community. A big thank you to the organizers for putting together an excellent conference! We can't wait to see what comes next from Oculus.
